by Molière
Mise en scène : Antoine Séguin – Elric Thomas
Argan le ‘the Imaginary Invalid’ wants to marry his daughter, Angélique, to an unattractive doctor, Thomas Diafoirus, to ensure that he is treated cheaply. But Angélique is in love with another young man, Cléante. With the help of Toinette, Argan's servant, she tries to influence her father, while opposing his second wife, Béline, whose sole aim is to steal her husband's fortune. Finally, on the advice of his sister Elmire, the ‘imaginary patient’ decides to become a doctor - the best way to stay healthy!
Antoine Séguin and his troupe take a spirited, modern and above all good-humoured approach to Malade Imaginaire, aiming to bring out all the comedy in the play. Although it is Molière's last play, it is nonetheless one of his funniest, ridiculing not only the doctors of his time but also the alleged illnesses of a father whose authority is thwarted by his daughter's desire for emancipation. These are always topical subjects, and the professional actors of La Compagnie du Gois, who have long been a big hit on stages in the Vendée, Paris and elsewhere, are happy to take them on.
